Spoiled

I knew a girl who was loved by everyone. Carefree and innocent. She played with dolls and was a perfect "mom" to baby Julia and baby Allison. She played with Barbies who had children and families of their own and pursued their every dream. She chatted up a storm, so much so that her Grandpa was shocked to lose $5 after she sat quietly for half an hour. She got chicken pox and lost her front two teeth at the same time. Boys had cooties and her best friend and she had a secret language "Pig Latin" which they used to escape in the Underground Railroad led by Harriet Tubman. She has a beautiful smile in all her pictures and eyes that contain depth.

Somebody told me about it and it burns me up at night
What kind of man would choose to spoil a child
Who do you call to make it right?
[...]
So I can't stop thinking about it - imagining that I
Could be the reaper grim enough to make it right
The problem is there's no one with
Enough to lose to pay for this.

Somebody's gotta pay for this.
Nobody gets away unless somebody dies
And it's been confirmed that there's been pain
Enough to satisfy the rage
For the losses she's sustained by age 13

I'm still obsessed about it because it doesn't end up nice
Another man, another choice, another child.
Who's going to pay for all these crimes?

- Steve Bell, Somebody's Gotta Pay

This girl is older now. She has much pain and has long lost her innocence. She was spoiled by one who was supposed to care. She woke on her thirteenth birthday knowing she had to protect her siblings, that dolls and barbies were just child's play and fantasy. She learned silence but there was great cost, no longer reward for her efforts. She learned to keep secrets and longed for the days when "pig latin" was her only secret.

What kind of man would chose to spoil a child?
